This image from my personal blog got really popular all of a sudden! It’s a positive mantra for a body part that many people have very strong emotions towards. For me I have struggled tremendously accepting my thighs. I made this page in my altered book to remind myself that it’s okay! It helps me, so I’ll share it with you! :)

“Occupy Your Heart”
I took this photo during a yoga event at Occupy LA at City Hall on 11.1.11. I brought “Off the Mat into the World” and a bunch of LA yoga teachers to come and teach . It was powerful, and important, and did a lot to calm the angst that was in the plaza that day. A fond memory of our time there. Thank you to all who participated in our yoga practice at Occupy LA. It meant so much to me and so many others. Namaste~
I saw this woman there. It was chill to see black people centering themselves.

Meet Firelei Baez!
I’ve been following Ms. Baez’s work since 2010 and the girl is FIERCE! Here are a few pics from her last exhibition with El Museo del Barrio. The pics are from her Natural Grooming Series — Peinado Natural, 2008. Here’s a small description of the series:
Natural Grooming is a series of portraits, I collaborated with several women in ‘natural hair’ forums; places where individuals can exchange information on natural hair grooming. I requested a snapshot that could showcase their experiences; which I would then interpret, introducing into each a myth that was formative to my own grooming during my upbringing in the Caribbean.

She is amaazing. These are from her “Geographic Delay Series:”

This photo, believe it or not, exposed practically everything on my body that I was once afraid of; my large nose, my flabby arms and thighs, and my round, chubby tummy.
They are not so scary to me anymore… at all.
It took me quite a while to get here, but it never would’ve happened if I didn’t make the conscious decision to stop hating my body, stop being afraid, stop worrying about what other people thought, and start living, start celebrating being alive!
Our bodies are our canvases, our shells, and within these shells we are glorious human beings who deserve love and respect and peace within ourselves.
